VIDEO // Republic of Moldova presents candidacy for presidency of 82nd session of UN General Assembly

Prime Minister Vasile Tofan announced today that the Republic of Moldova has the honor of presenting its candidacy for the presidency of the 82nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The announcement was made during Tofan’s speech delivered before the plenary of the United Nations General Assembly, which is taking place in New York.

He said that the decision reflects the intention to contribute to a more effective, inclusive and results-oriented organization.


“Because we believe that small states should help shape the international system, rather than merely depend on it, the Republic of Moldova has the honor of presenting its candidacy for the presidency of the 82nd session of the United Nations General Assembly. We want to contribute to a more effective, inclusive and results-oriented organization,” Tofan said.


In his speech, the prime minister conveyed a message about the role of the Republic of Moldova in a world marked by challenges, emphasizing that the country is choosing optimism based on the belief that the future can be built through its own efforts.


“We live in a world that gives us plenty of reasons for pessimism. But Moldova chooses something else. Not naïve optimism. Not the belief that problems disappear if we refuse to see them. But the optimism that comes from the certainty that our future is still in our own hands. For too long, Moldovans have been told that our country is too small, too exposed and too divided to choose its own future. We believed that for long enough. We know our problems. But we must also know our strength,” the official emphasized.


He stated that the Republic of Moldova has everything it needs to be a country that accomplishes great things.


“We are a free country. Our people are modest, work hard and put family first. Our diaspora is spread around the world, but our people remain close to one another and deeply care about what happens at home. Perhaps only when it comes to vineyards do we find it a little harder to be modest: we have serious reasons to believe that our wines could even be the best in the world. We have friends throughout Europe, across the Atlantic and far beyond these borders. And, at last, we have a realistic path toward building a country from which our children will not have to leave in search of new opportunities. Moldova may never be a great power. But we have everything we need to be a country that accomplishes great things,” Vasile Tofan concluded.


Prime Minister Vasile Tofan is visiting New York from September 23 to 26 to participate in the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. The official held bilateral meetings with several officials and delivered a speech before the plenary of the United Nations General Assembly.
