Foreign Minister: 868 Moldovan citizens in Canada benefited from consular services through the “Embassy Comes Closer to You” Program

A total of 868 citizens of the Republic of Moldova in Canada benefited last year from consular services as part of “Embassy Comes Closer to You” program, through which 22 outreach visits were organized. The data was presented by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi during a meeting with members of the Moldovan community in Toronto.

According to the minister, the authorities aim to facilitate Moldovan citizens’ access to consular services in Canada and maintain a constant connection with the diaspora.

Mihai Popșoi discussed with representatives of the Moldovan community the European path of the Republic of Moldova, progress in the process of joining the European Union, as well as the consular services available to citizens in Canada.


“European integration means better services, more opportunities, and conditions that will enable those at home to build their future in the Republic of Moldova,” Mihai Popșoi said.


The minister praised the diaspora’s contribution to promoting the culture and traditions of the Republic of Moldova, as well as strengthening the country’s image abroad. There are 16 associations of Moldovan citizens active in Canada, including the DOR Moldovan-Canadian Association and Moldova-Canada Link, which promote the Romanian language and maintain the community’s ties with its country of origin.


“I am pleased to see how well the Moldovan community has integrated into Canadian society and, at the same time, how closely it maintains its connection with the Republic of Moldova and our traditions. Through everything you do, whether we are talking about initiatives dedicated to Romanian culture and language or projects and partnerships between business communities, you help promote a better understanding of the Republic of Moldova internationally,” Mihai Popșoi said.


The discussions also addressed the opening, at the beginning of 2026, of the first Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Moldova in Canada, in the city of Quebec.

The minister also mentioned the Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Canada on social security, signed on March 13, 2026. The document allows insurance periods completed in both countries to be taken into account when determining pension entitlements. The Republic of Moldova has ratified the agreement, and the two countries are taking measures to bring it into force.
