Moldova denounces agreement on cooperation between Commonwealth of Independent States member countries on combating crime in transport

Moldova is denouncing the Cooperation Agreement between the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries on combating crime in transport. The decision was approved by the government today.

The draft was presented at the cabinet meeting by Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin. The official emphasized that the Agreement no longer fully corresponds to current realities, while its objectives are covered by other international and European instruments to which Moldova is a party.

“In recent years, the way Moldova cooperates with other states to combat crime has changed. Today, we have new and more effective mechanisms for exchanging information and cooperating, such as those involving Interpol and Europol. In the context, we propose denouncing the agreement concluded in 2004 between the CIS member states on combating crime in transport. The Agreement no longer fully corresponds to current realities, and the mechanisms it provides have not produced results for Moldova. It is important for us that the instruments through which we cooperate with other states are up to date and meet current security needs. At present, the goals of this agreement are already covered by other international and European instruments to which Moldova is a party. Denouncing the agreement will not entail additional costs and will not affect our country’s international cooperation,” said Daniella Misail-Nichitin.

The document will be submitted to parliament for informing. The Foreign Affairs Ministry will notify the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth of Independent States about the denunciation of the aforementioned Agreement.

The denunciation of the agreement is part of a broader process of reviewing treaties concluded within the CIS, with a view to aligning Moldova’s legislative and economic framework with European norms and standards.

In the last two years, Moldova has launched an extensive process to examine the relevance and applicability of treaties concluded within the CIS. According to the latest information presented by the authorities, 71 of the 283 CIS agreements have so far been denounced and approximately 60 are under consideration.
