Support on behalf of the European Union for Moldova’s economic development, integration into the European market, progress in the energy sector and ongoing reforms were the main topics discussed today by President Maia Sandu and European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Implementation and Simplification Valdis Dombrovskis, on a visit to Chisinau.

The head of state emphasized that the European Union was Moldova’s main trading partner and the principal destination for Moldovan exports. The gradual integration of the economy into the European market is opening up new opportunities for companies and attracting investment.

The interlocutors discussed the reforms under implementation in Moldova on its path toward European Union accession, as well as the progress achieved: fulfilling the commitments undertaken under the Moldova Growth Plan, simplifying and digitalizing procedures for the business community, combating undeclared work, and ensuring more rigorous management of public investment and budget expenditures. These reforms, along with the reform of local public administration, are making institutions more efficient, ensuring better use of public funds and bringing quality services closer to citizens.

As for the energy sector, the Moldovan president highlighted the diversification of natural gas supply sources, investments in electricity interconnections with the European Union and increased production from renewable sources. The next stage, which is already being prepared, aims to attract additional investments in electricity networks, storage capacity and energy efficiency.

Valdis Dombrovskis is on visit to Chisinau on October 1-2. His visit includes meetings with Prime Minister Vasile Tofan and cabinet members, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova Anca Dragu, representatives of the business community and members of the parliamentary commission for economy, budget and finance.
