Moldova’s candidate re-elected as member of United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture
Moldova’s candidate, Victor Zaharia, has been re-elected with 72 votes as a member of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture for the 2027–2030 term.
According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE), the re-election took place during the 11th Meeting of States Parties to the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT).
A total of 22 candidates from States Parties were nominated for the 13 available seats, including candidates from Romania, Ukraine, Montenegro, Greece, Uruguay, Portugal, Togo, South Africa and Rwanda.
The MAE says that Victor Zaharia’s re-election reaffirms Moldova’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights and the country’s contribution to international mechanisms for the prevention of torture.
The Ministry notes that the result was achieved through a coordinated effort by the diplomatic missions of Moldova, with the involvement of the Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Geneva, diplomats from the Mission in New York and the MAE’s Multilateral Affairs Directorate.
