Moldovan President pays official visit to Latvia

Head of State Maia Sandu is paying an official visit today to the Republic of Latvia. The visit is taking place at the invitation of President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs.

The visit aims to strengthen bilateral relations and deepen cooperation, with a focus on regional security and the process of the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

During the visit, the head of state will hold a meeting with her Latvian counterpart, followed by a joint press conference. The agenda also includes meetings with Prime Minister Evika Siliņa and the leadership of the Latvian Parliament. Maia Sandu will deliver a speech in the plenary of the Parliament in Riga.

In the context of the official visit, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated support for the Republic of Moldova in the European integration.

“Latvia and Moldova are united by a shared understanding of history, strong ties between citizens, and close cooperation between state institutions. We work closely with experts from Moldova in several areas – from European law and the economy to IT and cybersecurity. We are also united by a clear understanding of the threats that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine poses to the region and to the international order. Latvia continues to strengthen the resilience of the Republic of Moldova, including in the face of hybrid threats. In 2025, we seconded our first civilian expert to the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova and contributed to strengthening the country’s energy independence,” the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated.

Diplomatic relations between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Latvia were established on 1 September 1992.
