Former leader of Moldovan Democratic Party brought before judges in handcuffs

The former leader of the Moldovan Democratic Party (PDM), Vlad Plahotniuc, today was escorted under increased security from Penitentiary No. 13, where he is incarcerated, to the Chisinau Court, where the trial of the 'Banking Fraud' case, one of the most complex cases in Moldova’s history, was resumed.

The former politician was brought in handcuffs into the courtroom and was questioned by journalists. He avoided answering, noting that he would return with details.

Subsequently, cameramen were asked to leave the courtroom.

According to his lawyer, Lucian Rogac, the former politician is set to make press statements after the hearing concludes.

Vlad Plahotniuc has recently announced that he had completed reviewing the case materials and was ready to attend all court sessions. He dismissed the charges against him and labeled the case as 'political.'

Vlad Plahotniuc was detained in Greece in late last July and extradited to Moldova on September 25, being immediately placed under arrest. He is accused in a case involving the banking fraud, publicly known as the 'one-billion-dollars theft.'
