Moldova plants future: Over 1.2 million saplings in single weekend

This weekend, the Republic of Moldova experienced one of the most extensive civic mobilizations dedicated to the environment in recent years. Over 8,300 volunteers across the country—including students, teachers, foresters, public officials, NGOs, businesses, and members of the diplomatic staff —joined the national reforestation campaign #GenerationForest, contributing to the planting of 1,220,000 saplings over a total area of 286 hectares.

The actions were coordinated by about 2,000 foresters who guided the efforts in 130 locations set up throughout the Republic of Moldova. Activities took place on both public land provided by local authorities and in forest areas managed by Moldsilva Agency.

“The largest reforestation intervention occurred in Mihailovca, where government representatives, along with residents and volunteers from Cimișlia district, planted 110,000 saplings on 27 hectares. Additionally, the campaign included supplements in plantations from previous years in areas that required reforestation to strengthen existing ecosystems,” explained the Ministry of Environment.

The national campaign was launched on November 15 and will run until December 15, 2025, with the objective of expanding the country's total forested area by at least 3,500 hectares. The initiative marks one of the most ambitious forest regeneration actions of the last decade, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement in environmental protection and strengthening Moldova's climate resilience.

Through the contribution of volunteers and partner institutions, the campaign reaffirms the national commitment to a greener, healthier, and more sustainable future.
