Moldova's airspace allegedly overflown by drone during new Russian attack on Ukraine

The airspace of the Republic of Moldova was allegedly overflown last night by a drone during a new Russian attack on Ukraine. The area is being checked, and so far no objects posing risks to citizen safety have been identified.

According to the Border Police, a mobile patrol reported detecting the sound of an unidentified flying device, resembling a drone, approximately 2,000 meters from the state border line, in the direction of Săiți (MD) – Lesnoe (UA).

“The flying device is said to have moved at an altitude of up to 100 meters along the route of Alexandrovca (UA) – Săiți (MD), subsequently heading towards Tocuz and Opaci. The authorities informed the Ukrainian side, which confirmed the observation of a drone in Ukrainian territory, without any explosive load. The flying device later disappeared from the radar of the Ukrainian authorities,” announced the Border Police.

Regarding the case, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova emphasized that following the exchange of information with partners from Ukraine and Romania, the national airspace was confirmed to have been overflown by a drone. The flying device was not detected by airspace monitoring systems due to the low altitude of the flight.

Meanwhile, in Romania, two fighter jets took off last night to monitor the air situation at the border with Ukraine after a drone overflew Romanian airspace. Thus, at 00:20, a Ro-Alert message was sent for the northern part of Tulcea County, and for a few minutes, the signal of a drone was detected that penetrated approximately 8 km into the national airspace, from Vâlcov towards Periprava and Chilia Veche, where it disappeared from the radar.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the drone intermittently reappeared on the radar for about 12 minutes, from Colibași (Republic of Moldova) towards Foltești and later in the area of Oancea (Romania). Two more aircraft, F-16s of the Romanian Air Force, were dispatched from the 71st Air Base Câmpia Turzii.

“No ground impact cases have been reported. Teams of specialists are ready to start on-the-ground searches,” the Romanian Ministry of National Defense further communicated.
