Moldovan Foreign Affairs Ministry issues travel advisory via Palanca crossing point

The Foreign Affairs Ministry (MAE) today evening issued a travel advisory through the Palanca border crossing point. The warning is based on the analysis of security risks, in the context of Russia’s drone attacks on Ukraine.

Thus, the MAE informs citizens about the security situation in the area of border  with Ukraine, based on information communicated by the General Inspectorate of Border Police.

"In the context of ongoing security risks, including attacks in the vicinity of the area, the MAE recommends that citizens avoid traveling in this direction. The institution will continue to monitor developments and will inform the public according to the situation on the ground," the MAE said.

On December 18 at about 16:00, drones carrying explosive payloads hit the bridge over the Dniester, located outside the town of Maiaki-Udobnoe in Ukraine. The attacks continued both overnight and throughout today. As a result, crossing the Maiaki-Udobnoe bridge was repeatedly suspended and transboundary traffic through the crossing points: Palanca-Maiaki-Udobnoe and Tudora-Starokazacie experienced disruptions.

Under these circumstances, the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), jointly with the Un Refugee Agency (UNHCR), provided accommodation for Ukrainian citizens whose travel to Ukraine was limited following the bombings of the bridge over the Dniester. The IGSU operationalized a mobile camp in the locality of Palanca, in order to support individuals who chose to wait to cross the border outbound towards Ukraine, through the Palanca and Tudora crossing points.
