Moldovan PM says Moldova must enhance air defense capacity, amid drone incidents

The number of drones flying over and entering the airspace of Moldova is increasing. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan has made statements to this effect in Brussels, emphasizing the need to strengthen the country’s air defense capabilities.

“Yes, indeed, the number of drones flying over and entering our sovereign territory is increasing,” Vasile Tofan said.

The prime minister noted that, since 2021, Moldova had cooperated with the European Union in the field of foreign and security policy and that European support contributed to strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.

According to Vasile Tofan, strengthening the country’s air capabilities must be followed by an enhancement of Moldova’s air defense capacity.

“We are a neutral country and have committed to remaining a neutral country, but this does not mean that we are a weak country that does not invest enough in its own defense,” the prime minister stated.

The prime minister reiterated that Moldova is a devoted neighbor and friend of Ukraine, with which it shares a 1,222-kilometer border.

“This commitment also means making decisions that are not always easy domestically, including facilitating the transit of Ukrainian grain through Moldova. We are doing this, because maintaining Ukraine’s access to export routes matters for regional stability and global food security,” Vasile Tofan said.

The prime minister’s statements came after a projectile today morning had fallen   nearby the Palanca-Maiaki-Udobnoe border crossing point. The object ricocheted and struck a scheduled bus that was stationary near the barrier. A Border Police officer was slightly injured in the incident.
