National Army soldiers to intervene in Chișinău and Bălți to ensure citizens’ access to critical facilities

National Army soldiers will intervene throughout the day on Saturday in the municipalities of Chișinău and Bălți to ensure citizens’ access to critical facilities. Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu made the statement in the context of icy roads in localities across the country.

According to the official, the army will support the de-icing of sidewalks, while the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR) will provide sand and anti-skid materials.

“Chișinău is facing sleet and ice, and in other localities of the Republic of Moldova the situation is similar. I know how difficult it is to leave your home and fear, with every step, that you might slip. I want you to know that we are close and we are acting with all the seriousness that this situation requires. We have made the decision and asked the Army to intervene tomorrow, from first thing in the morning, on the ground in Chișinău. The Army will support the de-icing of sidewalks, while MIDR will provide sand and anti-skid materials. In other localities, we will intervene upon request and, if necessary, we will mobilize other public services as well. The most important thing is for people to be able to move around safely,” said Munteanu.

The Prime Minister mentioned that the actions are coordinated with the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations and the Police, the Carabineers, Fulger and Scorpion teams, so that interventions are fast and visible where they are most needed.

“We have about 40 tons of anti-skid material prepared, which will be picked up at 07:00 for distribution, and the works will prioritize access to hospitals, entrances to underpasses, areas near churches, and other places with intense traffic. We are intervening both in Chișinău and in Bălți to support municipal services in overcoming this difficult situation,” stated Munteanu.

In the context of complicated weather conditions, the official urged citizens to be cautious and follow the recommendations of the authorities.

“Please take care of yourselves and those around you. Thank you for your patience, solidarity and care for our community. At the same time, I extend my sincere thanks to the police officers, firefighters and rescuers, road workers, military personnel, energy workers, and medical staff, as well as to all teams involved in snow removal and intervention activities throughout the country,” he emphasized.

According to the State Hydrometeorological Service, the Yellow Code for ice and glazing remains in force until 9 February 20:00, and weather conditions may continue to affect road traffic. In this context, the authorities are asking citizens to avoid non-essential travel, to drive with increased caution, to adjust speed to road conditions, and to follow the instructions of police officers and field authorities.

In case of emergency, people are urged to call the 112 Service.
