Political leader of Moldova arrested for 30 days in file on electoral corruption, money laundering

Gabriel Calin, the leader of the Christian Social Union in Moldova Party, has been arrested for 30 days, being investigated in a file on electoral corruption and money laundering. The decision was pronounced by the magistrates of the Chisinau Court.

According to the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS), the 40-year-old man is accused of managing transactions through an international platform used for converting Russian rubles into other currencies, in order to avoid international sanctions applied to the Russian Federation.

Following more than 20 searches, investigators seized essential evidence: 36,000 dollars and 5,750 euros in cash, documents and electronic devices that confirm his involvement in the suspicious transactions.

According to investigations, between 2021 and 2025, the politician allegedly made conversions of over 150,000 dollars and managed funds coming from Russia.

Moreover, financial checks revealed a discrepancy of over 4.8 million lei between declared income and expenses made.

PCCOCS prosecutors announce that the criminal investigation is ongoing.
