Public Institution State Protected Natural Areas to be set up in Moldova

Moldova’s environmental institutions will be aligned with EU standards and a public institution (Public Institution "State Protected Natural Areas") will be created to manage the protected areas fund. A draft law to this effect was approved today by the Parliamentary Committee on Environment, Climate and Green Transition.

According to the document, the main measures include: transferring responsibilities for geology and the management of chemical substances to the Environment Agency; reorganizing the State Hydrometeorological Service into a new institution – the Authority for Meteorology and Environmental Monitoring – to manage climate risks and extreme weather events more efficiently; creating an operational subdivision within the Environmental Protection Inspectorate, which will operate continuously and intervene in cases such as accidental pollution, industrial discharges, fires, or illegal logging; establishing the Public Institution "State Protected Natural Areas" for unified administration of the protected areas fund; aligning national legislation with the EU Regulation on environmental economic accounts for uniform reporting of emissions, environmental taxes and expenditures; and granting national recognition to companies registered under EMAS, in order to stimulate green investments and economic competitiveness.

The draft law was developed by a group of PAS MPs, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, and is to be examined in first reading in Parliament.
