Speaker at Conference of Speakers of EU candidate states

Speaker Igor Grosu took part in the first Conference of Speakers of countries that are candidates for accession to the European Union, held in Belgrade.

He stressed that the accession process must remain merit-based, and that when reforms are carried out, progress should be recognized through concrete steps.

“The countries that are candidates for accession to the European Union have different paths but the same direction: a more united, more democratic and safer Europe,” Igor Grosu underlined.

During the conference, he held bilateral meetings with Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk and President of the National Assembly of Serbia Ana Brnabić. The discussions focused on inter-parliamentary relations, the European path and support for Ukraine.

“The Republic of Moldova knows where it is heading. And we will continue to work so that this European path is pursued seriously and with concrete results for the citizens,” he said.

The conference brought together the speakers of parliaments from the candidate countries to discuss the common challenges and opportunities of the European Union accession process, to exchange experience and best practices, to promote joint initiatives and to lay the foundations for a permanent platform for dialogue, coordination and mutual support at the parliamentary level.

The main topic - European integration in a changing geopolitical context, with a focus on the role of the parliaments of candidate countries in advancing the European integration process. The event was organized at the initiative of the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, and the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ruslan Stefanchuk.
