VIDEO // Online platform for smart metering launched in Moldova

The government has launched the platform www.contorinteligent.energie.gov.md - an online space dedicated to smart metering in Moldova. Through this platform, citizens can find answers to more questions related to the work of smart meters, their advantages and who can benefit from them.

The platform was launched in the context of a pilot project, which provides for the setting of 100,000 smart meters in households of Moldova by 2027, covering about seven per cent of consumers.

Of the total number, 35,000 meters have already been delivered and are being installed in the north and central-south regions. Another 25,000 meters will be set by the end of 2026. The smart metering project is implemented with the support of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Moldova and the government of Italy.

"Smart metering means more than a new device; it is an essential tool in the process of digitalizing the energy sector and optimizing energy consumption for everyone's benefit. First and foremost, we are talking about consumers, because the new mechanism shows real energy consumption, as well as distributors, who can collect data and intervene remotely at any time," said State Secretary of the Ministry of Energy Cristina Pereteatcu.

At the same time, according to the official, smart metering means more accurate invoices, without estimates; the possibility to monitor and adjust consumption; access to differential pricing, based on consumption hours; quicker interventions by operators in case of deficiencies and the automation of invoicing processes; a more responsible and greener consumption.

"All these bring us closer to European energy standards and contribute to our energy efficiency and sustainability goals," said Cristina Pereteatcu.

Smart metering does not imply additional costs for consumers during the pilot project phase.

In early 2025, the National Energy Regulatory Agency  approved a decision, whereby companies and residential consumers using smart meters will pay differentiated rates for electricity based on consumption hours.
