Moldovan economic development minister comments on U.S. notifications on customs duties

The government of Moldova stays committed to defending the national economic interests and maintaining stable trade relations with the USA, based on partnership, mutual respect and balanced solutions. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitization Doina Nistor has made statements to this effect, after the Moldovan authorities were informed that, starting from August 1, 2025, the United States will apply a 25-per cent customs tariff on products from  Moldova.

Doina Nistor pointed out that the decision came in a complicated global trade context, and the government has taken the necessary steps to have a minimal impact from the change in U.S. trade policy.

"Thus, in recent months, we have had direct consultations with Moldovan exporters operating on the American market and held diplomatic and technical discussions with American authorities, including representatives of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR)," Doina Nistor said.

The deputy PM stressed that the authorities would continue the dialogue with American authorities, as well as discussions with local producers, so that the most viable options for maintaining competitiveness on the external market are identified.

"In parallel, we are exploring alternative export markets, especially in the European Union, where 3 out of 4 Moldovan products are already directed," Doina Nistor noted.

Last year, the USA ranked 14th among Moldova's top trading partners, with a share of 2.5%. At the same time, data by the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitization shows that, in recent months, our exports to the USA have decreased by 40 per cent.

At the beginning of April this year, the United States announced the imposition of tariffs on 70 countries, including Moldova. Shortly thereafter, American President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause in applying the new taxes and ruled to reduce reciprocal tariffs during this period to 10 per cent.

Also, on July 9, American President Donald Trump sent a new series of letters to six countries, including Moldova, to announce additional customs tariffs to be applied on their products entering the USA, writes Agerpres.

Thus, the authorities were informed, that starting from August 1, 2025, the United States would apply a 25-per cent customs tariff on products from Moldova, lower than the initially 31-per cent tariff proposed by the American Government three months ago.
