Moldovan parliament hosts meetings of Parliamentary Assembly of Council of Europe

The parliament of Moldova is hosting meetings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), with about 60 parliamentarians from the 46 member states of the Council of Europe participating. The meetings will take place on November 20-21. On this occasion, Theodoros Rousopoulos, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe, and Despina Chatzivassiliou-Tsovilis, Secretary General of PACE, will also come to Chișinău.

On the sidelines of the event, meetings of the Presidential Committee, the PACE Bureau, the Ad-Hoc Committee on the New Democratic Pact, as well as the Standing Committee Meeting of PACE are to be held.

In the opening of the PACE Standing Committee’s Meeting, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Prime Minister Mihail Popsoi and PACE President Theodoros Rousopoulos will deliver speeches. The agenda also includes a debate on the observation by PACE of the recent parliamentary elections in Moldova, as well as a discussion on preventing and combating gender discrimination in the health field. A current affairs debate on the topic, Mobilizing citizens in defending human rights and democracy: recent developments in Latvia, was also requested.

At the same time on November 20, starting from 15:30, the participants meetings will have discussions on combating violence against women and the role of parliaments and parliamentarians in implementing the Istanbul Convention of the Council of Europe.

In Chisinau, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Theodoros Rousopoulos has scheduled meetings with the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu and Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Affairs Minister Mihail Popsoi.

The Parliament is hosting the meetings of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, given that Moldova holds the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe as of November 14, 2025, till May 15, 2026.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe is one of the two statutory bodies of the Council of Europe, an international organization dedicated to defending human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

Moldova joined the Council of Europe on July 13, 1995, becoming a full-fledged member state. The country has previously held the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe in 2003.
