Cancer patients to benefit from modern treatment at international standards thanks to new linear accelerator at Chisinau-based Oncological Institute
A state-of-the-art linear accelerator and the first stage of a modern radiotherapy complex today were inaugurated at the Oncological Institute. This is an essential investment for improving the care of patients with oncological diseases from Moldova.
The radiotherapy complex, made with the support of the U.S. Department of Energy, costs approximately two million dollars and the new accelerator, valued at 1.7 million euros, is a donation from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. This cutting-edge technology will allow the treatment of about 80 patients per day, reducing waiting time for access to radiotherapy by one third. The modernization will ensure patients receive more effective, faster and more precise treatment, comparable to the standards of major international medical centers.
“In 2019, we purchased the first linear accelerator for radiotherapy and in the last three years, the Ministry of Health, with the support of international partners, has invested over 200 million lei in the modernization of the Institute – the largest investment in cancer treatment in decades. We want Moldovans to be healthy and have a longer life; therefore we will continue to develop health services in Moldova,” stated President Maia Sandu.
President Maia Sandu emphasized that the modernization of medical infrastructure stayed a priority, in order to ensure accessible and quality health services for all citizens of Moldova.
