Moldova marks 30th anniversary of accession to Council of Europe

Moldova today marks the 30th anniversary of joining the Council of Europe — an organization promoting democracy, rule of law and human rights across the European continent.

On this occasion, Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi said that Moldova was commemorating a moment of deep historical significance, as this partnership has been a fundamental pillar in advancing reforms.

"On July 13, 1995, our country took an essential step towards democracy, rule of law, and respect for human rights, by integrating into a family of values that have constantly inspired and supported us in the process of democratic transformation and institutional consolidation. Three decades later, we can confidently say that the partnership with the Council of Europe has been a crucial pillar of Moldova's progress. Thanks to close and constant cooperation, we were able to advance significant reforms in justice, fighting corruption, protecting human rights, press freedom and democratic governance," Mihai Popsoi emphasized.

The official appreciated the role of support provided by the Council of Europe through the Venice Commission, the Group of Experts on Corruption, the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, the European Commission for the Efficiency of Justice and many other mechanisms.

"This support has been not only technical, but also profoundly value-oriented, aimed at strengthening the rule of law and guaranteeing the dignity of each Moldovan citizen. At the same time, Moldova has actively contributed to the dynamics of the Council of Europe through commitments made, parliamentary cooperation, experts and national expertise provided," Mihai Popsoi said.

The deputy PM noted that this partnership would continue to be solid, constructive, and oriented towards the country's European future. "On behalf of the Government of Moldova, I extend sincere thanks to the Council of Europe for its solidarity, expertise and constant support — including through Moldova's exemplary preparation for European integration. Long live Moldovan-European cooperation!" Mihai Popsoi stressed.

Moldova became a member of the Council of Europe on July 13, 1995. The main goals of the organization are to strengthen democratic stability in Europe by supporting political, legislative and constitutional reforms.
