Moldova to join Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes

Moldova will join the Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, drafted in The Hague on October 18, 1907. The government approved an initiative to this end today.

The Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, drafted in The Hague, is a cornerstone treaty in international law, which establishes clear procedures for the peaceful resolution of disputes between states and prevents the resort to force.

At the cabinet meeting, Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that, by joining this Convention, Moldova would gain access to dispute resolution mechanisms through mediation, conciliation, inquiry and international arbitration via the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague.

“Thus, our country will have possibility to appoint national arbitrators at this Court, will strengthen its commitment to international peace and security by concluding bilateral and multilateral agreements and will bolster our country's position in the diplomatic and legal international landscape. The present context requires active involvement in all regional and global mechanisms for peaceful conflict resolution and participation in the Permanent Court of Arbitration provides a tool widely recognized and supported by the international community,” the minister emphasized.

So far, 124 countries, including EU member states, have joined the Convention for the Pacific Settlement of International Disputes, drafted in The Hague. Only  Moldova and Bosnia & Herzegovina, from the European continent, are not parties to the Convention.

The draft will be submitted to parliament for consideration.
