Vision for administrative reform at district level to be presented Thursday in Chișinău
The Government will present on Thursday, October 1, the concept for administrative reform concerning the activities of the districts. Prime Minister Vasile Tofan made the statement today.
A meeting with district presidents and mayors of district centers will take place in Chișinău to present the concept.
The concept will include proposals regarding the number of districts, the powers delegated to Level II local public administration, and the necessary costs. It will also include the country’s future administrative map.
„Regarding administrative reform, in the first phase the focus was largely on town halls and strengthening them—strong town halls. People are also waiting for a vision regarding Level II, the districts. Tomorrow I have invited all mayors, district presidents, and mayors of district centers to present our vision for Level II to them, as well as to society. It is a major reform. There are many opinions. Now we need to determine how many districts there should be, what their powers should be, and what the costs should be. Tomorrow is the important day when we need to present this concept, and I believe people may be interested in finding out what Moldova’s administrative map will look like at Level II. Tomorrow we will make it public, including for consultation with society,” Vasile Tofan said at the beginning of today’s Government meeting.
Local public administration reform was launched by the Government in early 2026 and aims to strengthen the administrative capacity of town halls and improve public services.
