Alarming increase in number of COVID-19 cases: about 1,000 infections in Moldova in one week; National Public Health Agency confirms new Stratus variant of Covid
The National Public Health Agency (ANSP) informs that, during the period of August 18–24, 2025, 993 COVID-19 cases were reported, showing a 52-per cent increase compared to the previous week. Out of the total number, 346 cases (35 per cent) were recorded among children aged up to 14 years.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the ANSP's Information and Communication Service, Olesea Croitor, said that the sequencing performed by the National Reference Laboratory had confirmed the exclusive circulation of the Omicron variant, predominantly of the XFG ('Stratus') sublineages.
According to specialists, although it does not result in more severe clinical forms, the new COVID-19 variant has increased transmissibility, which is why the health authorities recommend the observance of the protection measures, including avoiding crowds, maintaining hand and respiratory hygiene, ventilating indoor spaces, consulting a doctor upon experiencing symptoms and vaccination.
ANSP warns that, with the start of the new school year and the increase in population’s mobility, heightened vigilance and constant application of prevention and control measures are essential.
Minister of Health Ala Nemerenco also highlighted the rise in the number COVID-19 cases, especially among young children.
‘’Among children under five, we have almost a doubling in the number of infections, while in those up to 14 years, the increase is slower. Nevertheless, I assume that there are more infections and I want to alert institutions, especially in the city, where the population is denser,’’ Nemerenco declared.
The health minister emphasized that many medical institutions are not equipped with rapid COVID-19 tests, causing dissatisfaction among the population. Nemerenco reminded that each medical institution was obliged to procure them, just as they do with medicines and other consumables.
