Moldovan education ministry changed enrollment conditions for first grade children
The Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) has modified the enrollment methodology for first grade children to align with the current legal and normative provisions and to ensure the inclusion of all children.
The new methodology provides possibilities for the enrollment in first grade of children of Moldovan citizens abroad, EU citizens, foreign nationals, refugees, and children with special educational needs.
Children with special educational needs will benefit from a transition period from preschool to primary education based on the recommendations of specialists from the territorial structures of psychopedagogical assistance within the Republican Center for Psychopedagogical Assistance.
The transition process will be carried out in three successive stages, which will include the organization of the transition process, the enrollment of children in first grade, and the monitoring of the child's adaptation to the school environment.
Additionally, children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, for whom the necessary conditions for educational inclusion cannot be ensured in the local school, may be enrolled in educational institutions that have the necessary conditions, upon the request of the parents.
For institutions specializing in arts and sports, the new modifications provide for aptitude tests to be conducted during the periods indicated and approved in the enrollment schedule for first grade children.
About 1200 general education institutions are operating in the Republic of Moldova. According to statistics, in the 2024-2025 academic year, the number of children enrolled in first grade was 31,790.
