Moldova launches tender for construction of large wind power plants with storage batteries

Moldova has launched a tender today for the construction of wind power plants with a total capacity of 170 MW, accompanied by energy storage systems of 44 MWh. The announcement was published in the Official Journal.

The tender marks a first for Moldova by including the storage component, aiming to increase the flexibility and reliability of the national energy system and to enhance the electricity generation curve.

Potential investors will be able to request clarifications until February 1, 2026, and bids can be submitted between February 16 and March 31. Meanwhile, an investor conference will be organized on January 29, 2026, where the provisions of the Bidding Documentation and tender procedure will be discussed.

According to the tender rules, the winning bids will be those with the lowest price compared to the cap price of 1.44 lei and not exceeding the cumulative capacity of 170 MW.

The Energy Ministry's estimates reveal that implementing these tenders will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy by 5.8% towards achieving the national target of 30% renewable energy by 2030. Together with the first tender of 165 MW, wind energy will cover approximately 11.4% of this target.

Furthermore, specialists estimate that new investments will lead to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 1.4 million tons of CO₂, equivalent to the annual emissions produced by about 310,000 cars.

According to statistics, over the past five years, Moldova has recorded an 11.6-fold increase in installed renewable energy capacities, reaching 897.50 MW at the end of September 2025. Photovoltaic installations are the most widespread renewable energy technology, representing 71% of the total installed capacity, with a total power of 640.57 MW. These are followed by wind installations, with a total power reaching 233.02 MW, representing 26% of the total. Hydro and biogas installation capacities are recorded at 16.75 MW (2%) and 7.16 MW (1%), respectively.
