Deputy Prime Minister warns of risks of Russian citizenship: Russian citizenship equal to ticket to front

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi has warned citizens of the Republic of Moldova to exercise caution regarding obtaining Russian citizenship, after the head of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, Alexander Bastrykin, boasted that tens of thousands of migrants had been registered for military service, and some of them had been sent to the front.

“Russian citizenship = ticket to the front. Those who doubt this fact, listen to Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigative Committee of Russia, who boasts that he caught 80,000 migrants. He registered all of them for military service, and 20,000 young migrants are already at the front,” Mihai Popșoi wrote on his Facebook page.

The warning comes in the context in which the Russian authorities have expanded the facilities for granting citizenship to residents of the Transnistrian region, a decision that has triggered reactions in Chișinău.

“I am sure that Moldovans do not want such one-way tickets. I warn all our citizens to be vigilant in order to avoid regrettable situations that can no longer be corrected,” the minister reiterated.

Vladimir Putin has signed a decree allowing permanent residents of the Transnistrian region aged over 18 to obtain Russian citizenship through a simplified procedure. According to the document, applicants are no longer required to prove knowledge of the Russian language, the history and legislation of the Russian Federation, nor to have lived for five years on the territory of Russia.
