Romania to build first five km of Ungheni – Chisinau highway, continuation of Union Highway

Romania will construct the first five kilometers of the Ungheni – Chisinau Highway on the territory of Moldova, which is a continuation across the Prut River of the Union Highway A8. The segment to be realized by the Romanian side includes the bridge over the Prut and the bypass of Ungheni municipality.

Romania's State Secretary for Transport Horatiu Cosma has said that the works were provided for in the contract on the design and carrying out for Segment 4 of the Union Highway A8, for which a tender was launched in late last December.

“A particularly important aspect is the fact that Romania will build, with European funds, the first kilometers of highway on the territory of Moldova. Under the same contract, the builder will also realize the first 5 km of the Ungheni – Chisinau Highway, between the bridge over the Prut and the bypass of Ungheni municipality – a new concrete step towards uniting all Romanians in the European Union,” said Horatiu Cosma.

This is the first time that a highway financed by European funds is being built simultaneously on both banks of the Prut River, paving the way for the future Ungheni – Chisinau rapid connection.

The Ungheni – Chisinau Highway, a strategic road infrastructure project, represents the continuation of the Union Highway A8, which will connect eastern Romania to the western part of the country and Moldova, through the Ungheni border point. This road corridor is meant to ensure a quick and modern connection between the transport networks of the European Union and Moldova.

A key element of the project is the road bridge over the Prut River at Ungheni, symbolically named the Bridge of Flowers, the construction of which started on April 26, 2025. The bridge will ensure direct crossing of the border and facilitate the movement of goods and passengers, contributing to the boosting of economic exchanges and the enhancement of the cross-border mobility.
