Moldovan government increases monument protection: restoration works can be funded from National Culture Fund
16 April 2025, Chișinău – Restoration works on monuments in the Republic of Moldova can be carried out with financial support from the National Culture Fund. New provisions for the protection of the country's cultural heritage were approved at today's cabinet meeting.
The National Culture Fund will be able to finance: feasibility studies and intervention project designs on monuments; direct intervention works - restoration, preservation or consolidation; activities such as identification, research, inventory, digitization and promotion of monuments, as well as the establishment of protection areas and prevention of their degradation.
For the first time, the funds will be accessible to individuals or private sector entities initiating projects to enhance monuments. The state's contribution will be set by government decision, depending on the importance of the works and the value of the projects.
The new provisions will enable more effective support for interventions on monuments and encourage community and private sector involvement.
In the Republic of Moldova, there are about 1800 historical monuments (architectural type), 112 public monuments and over 11,000 archaeological monuments of national importance. There are also local category monuments.
