Moldovan president signs agreement on 15-million-euros-worth financing on behalf of EU
Chisinau, 22 February /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today signed the agreement on financing between Moldova and the European Commission worth 15 million euros concerning COVID-19 Resilience Contract for Moldova, the presidential press service has reported.
The head of state thanked the European Union for the continuous support provided to Moldova and its citizens. ‘’Following the signing of this agreement, Moldova will receive an assistance worth 15 million euros, which will back us in efforts to combat the pandemic’s effects. This disinterested aid is quite important and needed for Moldova. I will insist that the money reaches the sectors worst hit by the pandemic: medical system, agriculture, small- and medium-sized enterprises. I will demand, at the same time, that the competent institutions monitor how this money is allocated, so that they reach the people who are most in need of support,’’ President Maia Sandu said.
The agreement is part of the EU’s response to Covid-19 within the Team Europe initiative. The agreement’s signing in its simplified form was agreed upon following an official visit to Brussels by Maia Sandu.
On the occasion of the agreement’s signing, EU Ambassador to Chisinau Peter Michalko said that the Covid-19 pandemic had triggered more challenges for Moldova. ‘’The health care system and the small and medium-sized enterprises were among the worst hit. We are confident that the new financial support provided by EU, as well as the backing provided since the beginning of the pandemic will contribute to the creation of a solid basis for the social and economic improvement and resistance to any shocks in the long run,’’ Ambassador Peter Michalko said.
