Monument in memory of Holocaust's victims inaugurated in central Orhei city of Moldova
Chisinau, 22 June /MOLDPRES/ - Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita has participated in the inauguration of a monument erected in the memory of the Holocaust’s victims. The work was constructed on the Alley of monuments on the Vasile Lupu Street from the central Orhei city, the government’s communication and protocol department reported.
In her speech, the prime minister resorted to history and condemned the atrocities of the past and the suffering to which innocent people were subjected: ‘’The Second World War brought so much misfortune, that many people through it would be the last one for the mankind. Unfortunately, not everybody learned the lessons of that war. One of the most devastated groups was the one of the Jewish and Romany minorities, for which the Nazi implemented the odious final solution, which hit our settlements too. Thousands of Jews and Romanies were taken out of their homes, shot and condemned to sure death through inhuman marches towards concentration camps.’’
Natalia Gavrilita also referred to the role of the historical symbols and buildings in the education of the young generation: ‘’The dark pages of the history must be not be hidden under the carpet of silence. We should talk to one another both about the good periods and the bad ones. We must convey the lessons of history to the young generations. The public forum monuments have a special role in the education of the new generations, which define the entire society.’’
According to historical data, about 4,000 Jews from the Orhei district were victims of the genocide from 1941-1945.
