Vladimir Plahotniuc to be extradited from Greece to Moldova; Justice Ministry receives decision from Greek authorities

The Justice Ministry today informed it had received, via the Chisinau Interpol National Central Bureau, the decision from the Greek authorities on the extradition of Vladimir Plahotniuc. The necessary set of documents has already been sent to the Interior Ministry, which started procedures to take over the former Democratic Party’s leader from the custody of the Greek authorities.

“The process of examining and confirming the extradition requests concerning citizen Vladimir Plahotniuc has concluded, and Moldova is set to take him over based on the Greek authorities' decision,” said the Justice Ministry.

According to the institution, the measure follows requests made by the Justice Ministry and the Prosecutor General's Office, immediately after Plahotniuc's arrest in Athens on July 22. The Prosecutor General's Office sent the first extradition request on July 24, followed by a request from the Justice Ministry on August 4, and a third request from prosecutors, sent on August 8.

The Interior Ministry confirmed that it was undertaking the necessary actions for his transfer to the country.
