Almost 360 thousand residents of Transnistrian region hold citizenship of the Republic of Moldova
As of June 30, 2026, the State Population Register recorded 366,830 residents domiciled in the localities on the left bank of the Dniester and in the municipality of Bender, of whom 359,867 are citizens of the Republic of Moldova, according to data provided by the Public Services Agency.
Of the total number of registered persons, 301,032 hold internal identity documents, while 339,114 possess the passport of the citizen of the Republic of Moldova. At the same time, the State Population Register records 6,963 foreign citizens, including holders of permanent and temporary residence permits, stateless persons, refugees, and beneficiaries of humanitarian protection.
In the first half of 2026, residents from the left bank of the Dniester and the municipality of Bender continued to benefit from the facilities provided by legislation for obtaining identity documents issued by the authorities of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, between January 1 and June 30, 2026, 7,404 persons benefited from facilities for the issuance of identity cards, and another 43 persons benefited from facilities for the issuance of provisional identity cards. By comparison, in the same period of 2025, facilities were granted to 1,419 persons for the issuance of identity cards, 116 persons for the issuance of identity documents, and 149 persons for the issuance of provisional identity cards or documents.
Statistics on civil status documents show that between January 1 and June 30, 2026, a total of 4,521 civil status facts and events produced and recorded in the localities on the left bank of the Dniester and in the municipality of Bender were certified. Of these, 1,818 were births, 1,191 marriages, 908 divorces, 523 deaths, and 81 changes of name and/or surname.
Information from the State Population Register shows that 174,030 men and 192,800 women with domicile in the Transnistrian region and in the municipality of Bender are registered. At the same time, the distribution by age groups indicates that approximately 56% of the population is between 20 and 59 years old, while persons aged 60 and over account for about 28% of the total.
The authorities of the Republic of Moldova continue to ensure access for residents of the Transnistrian region to public documentation and civil status services, thus contributing to guaranteeing the exercise of citizens’ fundamental rights and facilitating their access to public services provided by the state.
