Moldovan leadership pays tribute to heroes dead for Independence

The top leadership of the Republic of Moldova and representatives of security institutions have laid flowers at the monument The Grieving Mother at the Eternity Memorial Complex, on the occasion of the Independence Day.

President Maia Sandu conveyed a message of gratitude to the nation's heroes who had defended the country's independence, emphasizing the current generation's duty to preserve and strengthen this gift.

“Happy Independence Day, Republic of Moldova! We are here today to express our gratitude to the heroes of our nation, who defended the independence with arms in hand. Independence means living our lives in freedom, peace and dignity. It is our duty to our parents and grandparents, as well as to our children and grandchildren, to protect and strengthen independence, to transform the Republic of Moldova into a strong state capable of ensuring freedom and prosperity for many years,” said the head of state.

The president noted that Moldovans wanted to be part of the “great European family,” where there is safety and freedom and that the country must stay vigilant in the face of external challenges and attempts at meddling in internal affairs.

At the same time, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu referred to the maturity and resilience of the Republic of Moldova.

“Each passing year makes Moldova more mature, wiser and more prepared to face challenges. Happy Independence Day, Moldova, and to all those who have defended it and made it more respected and known in the world,” said Grosu.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean emphasized that independence is what unites the citizens.

“Independence unites us when we pay tribute to those who sacrificed themselves, when we care for their families, when we educate children in the spirit of patriotism and very importantly, when we undertake the necessary battles for building a state - an independent, sovereign and prosperous Moldova,” said the PM.

Today, the Republic of Moldova marks the 34th anniversary of the declaration of Independence, voted by the parliament on August 27, 1991. On this occasion, various festive events are organized in Chisinau and other settlements across the country. In the afternoon, three European leaders - President of France Emmanuel Macron, Chancellor of Germany Friedrich Merz and Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk will arrive in Chișinău.

In the evening, after 20:00, President Maia Sandu, along with high-ranking guests will take the stage on the Great National Assembly Square to address the citizens. The Independence Day events will culminate with a concert organized in the center of the capital.
