Nominated PM of Moldova Natalia Gavrilita fails to receive MPs' vote of confidence
Chisinau, 11 February /MOLDPRES/ - The nominated prime minister, Natalia Gavrilita, failed to receive the lawmakers’ vote of confidence today. Thus, under the legislation, President Maia Sandu must put forward a new candidacy.
The nominated PM presented the government’s action programme, as well as the team of ministers in plenum and answered the questions put by lawmakers during several tens of minutes.
After more speeches and breaks, the MPs ruled not to give vote of confidence to the candidate put forward by the head of state.
Just in the beginning of the today’s plenary meeting, the leader of the Party of Socialists (PSRM), Igor Dodon, informed that the PSRM faction would not back Natalia Gavrilita and would put up Mariana Durlesteanu for the office of prime minister. Subsequently, the head of the PSRM faction, Corneliu Furculita, said that a parliamentary majority had been created, made up of 54 MPs, who will vote for Mariana Durlesteanu and the cabinet of ministers proposed by her.
Under a decision by the Constitutional Court from 6 August 2020, if there is an absolute formalized parliamentary majority, the Moldovan president is obliged to nominate the candidate put forward by this majority for the office of prime minister.
