Parliamentary elections important for European future of Moldova, MEP says
This autumn's parliamentary elections are decisive for Moldova's joining the European Union and attracting European funds, announced MEP Siegfried Mureșan, chairman of the European Parliament's Delegation for relations with the Republic of Moldova.
According to him, the financial support offered by the European Union to Chișinău in recent years has been possible due to the firm commitment of the current government in implementing reforms, combating corruption, and promoting European values.
'The European Union does not offer blank checks. The massive support of 1.9 billion euros and the launch of accession negotiations were only possible because the Moldovan authorities demonstrated progress and seriousness,' Mureșan emphasized.
He reminded that during the previous governance, Moldova failed to access even a macro-financial assistance of 100 million euros, losing the last instalment of 40 million due to stagnation in reforms.
The current government has attracted the largest support package in the country's history, also paving the way for pre-accession funds intended to support candidate states in preparation for EU integration.
The official warns that European funds can be frozen or suspended, as happened in Hungary, where almost 20 billion euros were blocked due to deviations from the rule of law.
'For these funds not to be lost, Moldova needs a pro-European, pro-reform government,' added Mureșan.
In the context of the upcoming parliamentary elections, the MEP emphasizes that the outcome of the vote will have a direct impact on the country's European path and on the economic future of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.
