President: We are obliged to succeed in bringing Moldova into European Union and developing country
The government led by Alexandru Munteanu has taken important steps in the process of European integration and, going forward, we must have in the Government a united, strong team that will fulfill our national objective – accession to the EU. We are obliged to succeed in bringing Moldova into the European Union and developing the country. The statements were made today by President Maia Sandu, in the context of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu’s resignation.
“We must have in the Government a united, strong team that will fulfill our national objective – accession to the EU. Determined steps are needed to implement economic development measures and to clean up institutions. We are obliged to succeed in bringing Moldova into the European Union and developing the country,” said Maia Sandu.
At the same time, the President stressed that the Republic of Moldova has undertaken ambitious tasks in the process of European integration, which are to be achieved by September 1. In this context, she called on the members of the Cabinet of Ministers to continue their efforts to advance on this path, despite the situation created.
“This outgoing government has done an extraordinary job on the issue of European integration. We have very specific and ambitious tasks that we must fulfill by September 1. And this change of government must not affect our objective. That is why I am asking the ministers who remain, even if the government has been dismissed but the ministers are at their workplaces, as well as all other colleagues in the government, in the agencies working on the European integration agenda, not to take any break, not to stop for a single moment. On the contrary, we must work even faster, because obviously there are certain delays, certain decisions that will not be able to be approved by the government in one, two, three weeks, until the next government is appointed. My request is that, despite this situation, which will lead to some delays, we do everything possible to achieve by September 1 what we have set out to do. I repeat, the Government has worked very well on the issue of European integration and it is important that we continue at the same pace,” Maia Sandu emphasized.
This morning, Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu announced that he is stepping down, after eight months in office. Shortly afterwards, President Maia Sandu held a press conference in which she announced the launch of consultations with parliamentary factions for nominating a candidate for the position of prime minister.
