European integration and institutional reform, priorities announced by Vasile Tofan: I will devote all my energy to ensure country succeeds
The candidate of the Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) for the position of prime minister, Vasile Tofan, announced that he has accepted the nomination proposed by the party, stating that his goal is to accelerate European integration, strengthen state institutions, and foster the economic development of the Republic of Moldova.
In a post, Vasile Tofan said that he accepted the candidacy “with great responsibility,” noting that the Republic of Moldova is going through a decisive moment.
“Over the last few years, the Republic of Moldova has had many remarkable victories, and now we have the historic chance to become a member state of the European Union and to build a European and free future for our country and for all our children. This success depends on all of us,” the prime minister-designate stated.
He emphasized that his priorities align with those announced by President Maia Sandu and PAS, including signing the Treaty of Accession to the European Union in 2028, making state institutions more efficient and resilient, as well as stimulating economic development in order to raise the standard of living.
“I understand both the gravity of this moment and the real prospect of taking Moldova to where it should have been 20 years ago. We have no right to miss this historic opportunity. I will devote all my energy, everything I have learned and know, so that the country succeeds and we meet citizens’ expectations,” Vasile Tofan declared.
The announcement came after PAS president Igor Grosu stated that the parliamentary faction had decided to propose Vasile Tofan for the position of prime minister during the consultations convened by President Maia Sandu for nominating a candidate to head the Government. According to Grosu, the decision was taken after several discussions within the faction, during which Tofan presented his vision and plan for the future Cabinet. The PAS leader pointed out that Vasile Tofan has experience in investments, business, and management, gained both in the Republic of Moldova and abroad. He is currently an investor at Horizon Capital, an investment fund focused on Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, and has coordinated investments in companies such as Purcari, Glass Container Company, and maib.
Previously, he worked in consulting at Monitor Group and in corporate development at Philips in Amsterdam, and he is a graduate of Erasmus University Rotterdam and Harvard Business School. Recently, Vasile Tofan publicly presented a reform program focused on restructuring public administration, increasing the efficiency of state institutions, stimulating investments and exports, reducing bureaucracy, reforming the pension system, and reorganizing local public administration.
The consultations for nominating a candidate for the position of prime minister were convened after the resignation of Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.
According to the Constitution, after the resignation of the prime minister, the Government only performs the duties of managing public affairs until a new cabinet of ministers is sworn in.
