VIDEO // Good news for diaspora: Moldovan driving licenses to be valid in France

Citizens of the Republic of Moldova settled in France will soon be able to convert the Moldovan driving licenses into French ones, without additional exams. The National Assembly of France approved on Tuesday the bilateral agreement on the recognition of Moldovan licenses, Speaker Igor Grosu said.

The agreement is to be promulgated by President Emmanuel Macron, after which it will enter into force.

According to officials, the new procedure will eliminate the bureaucratic barriers that Moldovan citizens in France have faced so far.

“Our citizens will be able to obtain the French license more simply and more quickly, without additional exams and without complicated procedures. I thank the French parliamentarians for their supportive vote and all those involved in achieving this result,” said Igor Grosu.

According to Chișinău authorities, the agreement will facilitate the integration of the Moldovan community in France, where tens of thousands of Moldovan citizens live.

The agreement provides for the reciprocal exchange of category B driving licenses, issued from January 1, 2020. For licenses issued before January 1, 2020, it is first necessary to exchange them for more recent national models.

The negotiations lasted almost two years and included technical missions, analysis of the national legal framework, and the establishment of technical and legal provisions. The issue was constantly addressed in the bilateral dialogue, including in meetings between President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu and President of the French Republic Emmanuel Macron.

The Republic of Moldova has already signed mutual recognition agreements on driving licenses with Turkey, Lithuania, Italy, Albania, Spain and Greece, as well as a joint declaration of intent with Germany on the transcription of driving licenses.
