Moldovan president, delegation of Czech senators discuss Moldova’s European path, bilateral cooperation

President Maia Sandu today met a delegation of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Security Committee of the Czech Republic’s Senate, comprising the Committee’s Chair, Pavel Fischer, Vice-Chair, Marek Oštádal and Senator Tomáš Czernin. The discussions focused on Czechia’s support for Moldova’s accession to the European Union, security cooperation and development assistance projects.

The head of state thanked Czechia for supporting the country’s European path and for the assistance provided in advancing reforms. The Moldovan president expressed confidence that the partnership between the two countries would continue to strengthen, as Moldova moves closer to joining the European Union.

The bilateral political dialogue has intensified in recent years, with reciprocal visits by heads of state and ministers. Last month, the Czech Senate adopted, at the initiative of Senator Pavel Fischer, a resolution on the importance of Moldova for regional stability and its prospects for joining the European Union. The document confirms the broad support in Czechia for the country’s European path.

Moldova is one of the priority countries for Czech development assistance. Among other initiatives, Czechia supports the RESTART reform, which is modernizing the social assistance system, as well as compensation for energy invoices for low-income families, provided through the Energy Vulnerability Reduction Fund. Czechia also provides humanitarian and financial assistance to Ukrainian refugees in Moldova.

The delegation of the Senate of the Czech Republic is in Moldova from 21 to 23 September. The visit’s agenda includes meetings with representatives of parliament, the government and security institutions, focusing on bilateral cooperation, the security situation in the region and Moldova’s European path.
