
Over 2,000 weapons melted down with EU, UNDP support
Chisinau, Nov. 25 / MOLDPRES /- 2119 non-compliant weapons, 50,000 bullets and 142 weapons accessories and components were destroyed today by smelting, with the support of the European Union and UNDP.
The batch of destroyed weapons was accumulated in the last two years by the General Inspectorate of Police, and the budget granted for the smelting was 12,800 euros and was provided by the European Union, through UNDP.
"The Republic of Moldova is firmly committed to ensuring the efficient management of small arms and light weapons. Therefore, today's exercise directly contributes to reducing the threat of their proliferation, so that every citizen feels more protected, "said Alexandru Bejan, deputy head of the General Inspectorate of Police.
In 2005-2019, 16,235 firearms were destroyed by smelting in the Republic of Moldova, with the financial support and monitoring activity of the Government of Switzerland and Norway, the European Union, the Control Center for Small Arms and Small Arms in Europe. South East (SEESAC), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the OSCE Mission to Moldova.
