Chisinau, Dec. 2 /MOLDPRES/- President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu met in Tokyo with several members of the Japanese Legislature. During the meeting, the head of state spoke to the Japanese parliamentarians about Moldova and bilateral cooperation with Japan, and the reforms carried out in the context of our European integration process, the presidential press service has reported.

"I told them about our fight for democracy and the road to the European Union, about the efforts to reform key sectors and build a state where every citizen enjoys respect. I mentioned the excellent relationship we have with Japan, which is the third most important development partner of Moldova, with generous contributions in agriculture and the health system, in the local infrastructure", the head of state said. Relevant examples in this regard include the USD 26.54 million 2KR project through which our farmers were able to increase their agricultural production. Also, recently, the Government signed a grant agreement with the Japanese side, worth over seven million euros, through which high-performance equipment will be purchased for five public medical institutions in the country.

Maia Sandu also spoke about the uncertainty into which our region was thrown by Russia's war against Ukraine, highlighting the biggest problems facing the Republic of Moldova because of this. "Diversification and energy efficiency projects will bring tangible results over time, but Moldova needs support now, in order to stop depending on suppliers who use energy resources as a weapon," she said.

On the first day of her visit to Tokyo, Maia Sandu also had a meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives Hiroyuki Hosoda. The discussion focused on regional security and bilateral cooperation. The head of state voiced confidence that despite all the crises, Moldova will succeed in carrying out the reforms, improving the business environment and becoming an attractive destination for investments.

Maia Sandu is visiting Tokyo on 1-3 December.
