Estonia to open Embassy in Chisinau: new signal of support for European path of Moldova
Estonia will open an embassy in Chisinau, which will become operational in the second half of this year, marking an important step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. With this decision, all three Baltic States — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — will have diplomatic missions in Moldova.
The announcement was made on February 2 during a joint press conference organized on the occasion of the visit of the speakers of the parliaments of the Baltic States to Chisinau, at an invitation by the Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu. The decision was confirmed by President of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar, who described the opening of the embassy as a clear signal of Estonia’s commitment to Moldova and its European path.
The Estonian official underlined that Estonia is the main partner of Moldova in the process of digitalizing public services and that Estonian experience contributes to building more efficient and transparent institutions.
“Opening the embassy in Chisinau shows the high level of our relations and the constant support for Moldova’s transformation,” said Lauri Hussar.
The President of the Riigikogu praised the progress made by the Moldovan authorities in the process of European integration and encouraged the continuation of reforms. According to him, the opening of the new diplomatic mission reflects Estonia’s serious approach to Moldova’s accession to the European Union and fits into a broader trend of strengthening the European diplomatic presence in the country.
At the same time, Lauri Hussar highlighted the “very good” cooperation between the two states in developing a digital society, noting that digitalization increases institutional transparency and facilitates the negotiation process within European integration.
The opening of Estonia’s embassy in Chisinau is seen as an important symbolic and practical step that confirms the political and technical support of the Baltic States for Moldova and strengthens its path towards the European Union.
