PCCOCS, Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office to merge into single specialized institution

The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (PA) and the Prosecutor's Office for Combating Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) will merge into a single institution. A draft law to this effect was registered on 12 February in Parliament. Speaker Igor Grosu made the statement at TV show.

According to Igor Grosu, the decision to merge the two specialized prosecutor's offices was made following an analysis of the situation during the electoral campaigns conducted in the Republic of Moldova, when law enforcement bodies detected 'tidal wave of dirty money' and interferences in electoral processes.

'Analyzing the performance of these two institutions over time, there's a visible difference - how one institution acts compared to the other. They should not do anything that pleases me as an individual or as a representative of a political party. They must work in the interest of the state,' he said.

Grosu hinted that the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office had not done its job well, and the merger is a step to enhance the effectiveness of actions aimed to combat organized crime and political corruption, which have merged into a single phenomenon.

'We must somehow respond to these threats. We are obliged to analyze all these matters and come up with bold political decisions,” he said.

He noted that the new institution will be a specialized prosecutor's office. More details about the draft law establishing this body will be presented on Thursday morning before the plenary session of Parliament.

Additionally, the speaker assured that the draft law would be subjected to public debates with the participation of interested parties, particularly employees from PCCOCS, PA, CSP, and the general prosecutor. All proposals and recommendations will be analyzed, after which the draft law will be voted on by Parliament.
