Moldova signs Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence
Chisinau, 5 September /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova has signed the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights, Democracy and Rule of Law. The document was signed in Vilnius by Justice Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru, on a working visit to Lithuania.
The Council of Europe Framework Convention is the first international treaty which provides a global legal framework for the management of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems during their entire cycle of life, thus guaranteeing the observance of human rights, democracy and rule of law principles.
„This convention is not only a legal instrument, but also a promise for us to make sure that the artificial intelligence is developed and used in a way which serves the public good and improves the well-being of our citizens. Moldova speaks out for the promotion of the balance between innovation and protection of the human rights, democracy and rule of law,’ the Moldovan justice minister said.
The minister stressed that Moldova joined the international community and it was essential to maintain an approach focused on man, in which the supervision and human responsibility stay in the focus of the AI systems.
The Framework Convention was adopted by the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers on 17 May 2024 and comprises 36 articles. This is a complementary document to the European Union Artificial Intelligence Act, which will be transposed into the national legislation with Moldova’s accession to EU.
