Nisporeni hospital ward with violations of sanitary and hygiene norms to be renovated

Nisporeni hospital ward, where violations of sanitary and hygiene norms were found, will undergo major renovation. Minister of Health Emil Ceban made the statement before the cabinet meeting.

According to the official, the authorities and the ministry’s structures will monitor the situation in hospitals in order to ensure good conditions for patients.

"I am very sorry for everything that is happening. However, this is the reality. A very big responsibility lies with the hospital management, including local authorities. Things must be constantly monitored, including by the National Agency for Public Health (ANSP) and the services of the Ministry of Health, so that there is constant evaluation of hospitals. We want to reorganize all hospitals in the country so that the population has access to medical services and, at the same time, to ensure favorable conditions within the institutions," said Emil Ceban.

The minister stressed that the managers of medical institutions are responsible for complying with sanitary norms.

"This ward will undergo major renovation. We will provide support everywhere where conditions do not meet the requirements. The primary responsibility lies with the managers of the institutions, since the Minister of Health cannot carry out inspections every day or give instructions on how things should be organized. Hygiene norms are fundamental in healthcare. Thus, even if there are no proper conditions or recent renovation, cleanliness, hygiene and disinsection are priorities in medicine, and hospital managers are primarily responsible for this. Also, hospitals in the country are currently in the accreditation stage. To be accredited, institutions must comply with the standards. When hospital conditions do not meet the norms, wards or subdivisions are closed, or they are accredited temporarily, provisionally, for a determined period of time, until all shortcomings are eliminated," noted Emil Ceban.

A week ago, a woman posted on social networks images showing disastrous conditions in the children’s ward of Nisporeni hospital. The video captured several irregularities, including a non-functional bathroom, dirty mattresses and bed linen infested with cockroaches.

The ANSP and the National Council for Evaluation and Accreditation in Health confirmed the existence of several violations related to sanitary and hygiene norms and the organization of internal processes within the ward. The activity of the ward has been temporarily suspended, and the hospital director has submitted resignation.
