European Village programme: residents from south Moldova settlement to enjoy running water

Chisinau, 6 June /MOLDPRES/ - The residents from the Hagichioi village, commune Albota de Jos, southern Taraclia district, have running water. The infrastructure project was carried out within the European Village National Programme, edition I. The commune’s mayor said that this project represented the second chance for the residents of Hagichioi, who in the last years have suffered because practically all wells ran dry and those several springs left did not meet the sanitary standards.      
The project included the construction of 4.6 km of water supply network, setting of 63 branch pipes, as well as the making available for use of two anti-fire reservoirs and a pumping station.  
Presently, 92 households from the village, with over 300 people, enjoy drinking water, certified according to the standards imposed by the Environment Agency. Besides, the kindergarten and community centre were connected to the aqueduct.  
The overall cost of the project is of over 2.7 million lei – money allocated by Moldova’s government through the National Fund for Regional and Local Development.  
The mayor of the Albota de Jos commune, Vitalie Tataru, stressed the importance of this project as a major achievement with a sustainable impact on the community, giving citizens access to an essential service for life. ‘’This project represents the second chance for the residents from Hagichioi, who in the last years have suffered because practically all wells ran dry and those several springs left did not meet the sanitary standards. Thus, people had to daily cover distances of 2.3 kilometers to find drinking water,’’ the mayor noted. Tataru also said that the situation had radically changed in the village with the construction of the aqueduct and people now enjoy a completely different comfort.     
According to the National Office for Regional and Local Development, within the European Village National Programme, edition I, 154 projects on the construction and extension of water and sewerage supply systems were approved. So far, 104 projects have been finished, bringing benefits worth about 190,000 people from 112 settlements of Moldova.
