MEP: Russia steps up pressure on Moldova ahead of parliamentary elections

Romanian MEP, President of the European Parliament Delegation for Relations with Moldova Siegfried Mureșan warns that Russia and its allies are stepping up efforts to destabilize Moldova as September parliamentary elections approach. According to him, the stakes of the election are the country's future European path.

"Kremlin wants a change of direction in Chișinău to stop Moldova's path towards the European Union," Mureșan said.

He listed several forms of hybrid aggression that have been used in recent days, including promises of illegal payments to fund anti-government protests, cyberattacks on government infrastructure, and the launch of false accusations aimed at undermining trust in the electoral process, especially among the diaspora.

The MEP emphasized that these actions target not only Chișinău but the entire region and the security of the European Union.

"For Romania, the stability and European path of Moldova are essential: our eastern borders are safer when there is a pro-European and democratic partner in Chișinău," Mureșan said.

"Russia must not win in Chișinău or in other European capitals," he added.

He made a renewed call for strong and constant support for Moldova, emphasizing that the country's future must be decided solely by its citizens, through a free and fair vote.
