Moldovan former president celebrates birthday today
Chisinau, 27 January /MOLDPRES/- Second president of Moldova Petru Lucinshi turned 82 today.
On 4 February 1993, he was elected Speaker of Moldova, and on 29 March 1994 he became Speaker again. From 1 December 1996 to 4 April 2001, he held the position of President of the Republic of Moldova.
He was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the MSSR (1967-1980), a member of the Supreme Soviet of Tajikistan (1986-1990), a member of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR (1986-1991), from 1990 to 1996 - a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova.
He is currently president of the Foundation for Strategic Studies and Development of International Relations Lucinschi.
In 2005 he was awarded the Order of the Republic. He is also a knight of prestigious awards abroad - Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor (France, 1998), Order of the Savior (Hellenic Republic, 1999), Grand Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher (Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Jerusalem, 2000), Order of the Star of Romania in the rank of Colan (Romania, 2000).
